AIS JURY PROCESS

If you entered your artwork for a juried exhibition it will be reviewed by a panel of five highly qualified, nationally recognized Master and/or Signature level artists. The jurors do not know who the other jurors are and they each work independently. We use a “blind jury” process where the juror does not know the identity of the artist whose work he/she is viewing. Scoring is based solely on the merit of the work, including technical merit and level of impressionistic style.

The jurors view every painting that is entered and assigns each one a score from one (low) to ten (high). The jurors have a very short time to view and score each piece which is why it is so important that the images of your work be the best quality possible.

Once all of the jurors have completed scoring all entries, the scores are tabulated automatically by the jurying service. The number of paintings selected is determined according to the available display space in the host gallery.

The highest scoring paintings which fall within the number of pieces the gallery can accommodate become the accepted paintings for that show. Although no jurying process is perfect, AIS believes this method of selection is the most fair and unbiased method currently available.

Read a letter about the ups and downs of entering juried exhibitions.

AIS partners with ShowSubmit for our call for entry process.

AWARDS

AIS AWARDS JUDGE: Each exhibition has ONE Awards Judge.  The judge does not review all the submitted entries--just the accepted work. The Awards Judge does not score the submitted work. The Awards Judge reviews the accepted work for selection of prizes and determines the awards which are presented at the opening reception/awards ceremony.

Awards for each exhibition vary each year. If you are selected to receive an awards, you may be required to prove your US residency. You will also complete an IRS Form W9.

As all AIS members must be legal US residents, if you cannot prove your residency, your membership will not be valid and you are not eligible for any award.

WHY AIS DOES NOT RELEASE INDIVIDUAL SCORES ON IMAGES

Keep in mind that every show is juried by a different group of jurors and every show consists of a completely different group of paintings entered. We often suggest to our members to perhaps work with an artist whose work you admire to mentor you or at least provide a critique of your work. Remember, the five jurors had to score over 1,700 works and 156 were accepted.

We do not release scores for many reasons nor do the other national arts organizations that we are similar to. The jurors compile their scores and only provide the overall score in a blind system. The jurors review the entries looking for impressionistic quality of the work in addition to the technical merits (composition, value, design, overall quality etc). They also use our Definitions of Impressionism as a guide. The American Impressionist Society defines American Impressionism as “The concern for light on form, color, and brushstrokes. Allowing equal latitude between these attributes, and recognizing not a single definitive element, but several factors–including light and hue, visual breakdown of detail, concern for contemporary life, and cultivation of direct and spontaneous approaches to a subject.”

You can review our catalogs with exhibition images from past exhibitions.  And, of course, attending the shows to see the accepted work in person is invaluable to all of our artistic growth as artists.

We know entering your artwork in a juried exhibition can be a stressful and vulnerable situation and we commend you for your efforts.
