THE ESSENCE OF REALITY
3 Day Indoor Workshop

Learning to see and interpret the subject matter, with an emphasis on expressive painting, will be the subject of this workshop. We will discuss the basics of composition, value and color, and the use of contrast and rhythm. Discussions will also include materials, technique, “how-to”, and the use of lost and found edges. We will be paying particular attention to the importance of seeing and learning how to respond to and evaluate the information. I like to continually remind my students that the model and their paintings are entirely different. A painting should allow the artist to interpret the subject matter in a creative and interesting way. The ability to see and paint what one is seeing is extremely important, but it is the interpretation of that seeing which results in an interesting and sensitive painting. Live models will be our principal subject matter. Instruction will be in oils. This class is primarily for the intermediate to advanced painter.
Carolyn Anderson is a member of the Northwest Rendezvous, and a nationally recognized workshop instructor. Her many awards include two CM Russell Best of Show awards, Artists’ Choice Awards, and several NWR Merit Awards. Her paintings have been featured in many national publications over the years, including Art of the West, Southwest Art, Big Sky Journal, American Art Connoisseur, and most recently, American Artist Workshop magazine. She has conducted workshops for the Scottsdale Artists’ School, Walt Disney Imagineering, and the Frye Museum.

The goal of this workshop is to create a highly structured learning environment that will help you achieve breakthroughs that have the potential to change the quality of your work. This workshop is designed for the painter who has made a serious commitment to artistic growth and is willing to engage in intensive study. Through his philosophy of always preparing and practicing at the highest level, Christensen will demonstrate how only then is it possible to paint at your highest level.
We will cover a lot of territory in a concentrated period of time. This workshop will include classroom lectures and instructional handouts, outdoor painting sessions, field study, study of deceased master works, critiques and Q & A.
Christensen, whose paintings are now collected by people around the world, was reared in Lander, Wyoming, son of hardworking parents who passed on a strong commitment to excellence and dedication to athletic competition. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Denver Art Museum, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the National Museum of Wildlife Art. He has received numerous awards and accolades including the Prix de West in 2000 and has participated in several solo, shared and museum exhibitions. Christensen currently resides in Victor, Idaho (twenty minutes from Jackson Hole, Wyoming) where he recently completed construction on his new craftsman style studio and elegant exhibition space.
